Wow, I now start to see what you mean about novel!SW's character arc and how gripping it is. I didn't actually see this in the drama AT ALL. Did I miss the cues? Or did they take it out?
Speaking of missing cues: is it your impression that the Buddhist elements in the novel are "sincere", or are they like the Christian elements in Supernatural, in which any similarity to actual religion is coincidental?
